Johann Goll van Franckenstein
1722 Frankfurt/Main – Velzen 1785

In 1742 van Franckenstein came from Frankfurt to Amsterdam, where he joined a company in 1750. Aside from being a successful businessman he became an major collector establishing one of the most important collections of Nederlandish drawings. Through his relations to the court in Vienna he was ennobled by Empress Maria Theresa in 1766.

As an autodidactic artist van Franckenstein mainly made landscape drawings from nature, views of Amsterdam and its surroundings or travel pictures along the Danube and the Rhine rivers.
