Christian Gottlob Hammer
1779 – Dresden – 1864

German painter and draughtsman

From 1794 Hammer studied at the academy of arts in Dresden, from 1798 under J.Ph. Veit (1768-1837), who mainly made landscape engravings. In 1816 Hammer became member of, in 1829 professor at the academy.

Hammer was a very diligent artist. Many of his pencil, pen-and-ink, brush and sepia drawings and watercolour paintings, made between 1799-1855, are hold by art collections in Dresden, Berlin and Weimar. Motifs for his own landscape sketches he found in Saxony, Northern Bohemia (Karlsbad, Teplitz), Silesia and the Spree forest.

Goethe liked Hammer's works of art very much and visited him in his studio in Dresden 1810.
