Johann Jakob Hoch
1750 – Mainz – 1829

German painter and draughtsman

Johann Jakob Hoch and his brother Georg Friedrich (1751-1812) were sent for educational reasons abroad by the elector of Mainz Friedrich Karl von Erthal. In 1778 they travelled together to Vienna, 1783 from Vienna to Paris, and in 1788 they returned to Mainz.

Hoch made paintings in oil, gouaches, drawings and miniatures, with portraits, still lifes, history and genre pictures, and views of Mainz and its surroundings. All of them are skilfully worked out in detail.
