Cornelis van Poelenburgh
1594/95 – Utrecht – 1667

Van Poelenburgh was a pupil of A. Bloemaert (1564-1651). From 1616 until 1623 he lived in Italy. There he worked and studied serveral years under A. Elsheimer (1578-1610) in Rome. In 1623 he founded, together with Jan van Bylert (1603-1671), a Dutch artists' association. From 1626 he lived in Utrecht, 1637 he stayed in London.

The motifs of his drawings correspond to them of his oil paintings: arcadian landscapes, well-known Roman monuments and ancient ruins.
