Emanuel Steiner
1778 – Winterthur – 1831

Swiss painter, draughtsman and etcher

Emanuel Steiner first was a pupil of J.R. Schellenberg (1740-1806). From 1796 to 1798 he studied in Dresden under the painter A. Graff (1736-1813), who also came from Winthertur. 1803/04 Steiner lived in Rome, but he moved to Paris already in 1804. As an etcher he was trained by G.C.F. Oberkogler (1774-1856) in Zurich. His collection of copper engravings was the basis for the Print Room in Winterthur, which holds two oil paintings and hundreds of watercolour paintings and drawings by Steiner.
