Jacob Willemz. de Wet
about 1610 – Haarlem – after 5.09.1675

Dutch painter and draughtsman

The history painter de Wet probably had been a pupil in Rembrandt's workshop between 1630 and 1632. In 1644 he became a member of the painter's guild in Haarlem (The Guild of Saint Luke). Numerous variants of his name are associated with de Wet (Johann Düwett; Jan de Wet; Johan de Wett; Johann de Wette). He also was a pupil of J.A. Berckheyde (1610-1693) and P. Potter (1625-1654).

His son Jacob de Wet (1640-1697) and J.Ph. Lemke (1631-1711) had been his pupils. A sketchbook of Jacob Willemsz. de Wets from the year 1636 is located in Haarlem (Gemeentarchief, MS Hs 230).
