Wilhelm von Kobell
1766 Mannheim – Munich 1855

Gate tower and houses behind bushes and trees, probably in the palatine area.

Pencil drawing, grey wash, on strong handmade paper, on lower right a collector's note with pencil „Schminck“.  36,4:44,5 cm.

Upper and left margins trimmed, smoothed vertical fold at the left side.

Provenance: From the artist's estate; collection Luise Storm, Frankfurt a.M.; collection of the lawyer Herbert Schminck, Frankfurt a.M., d. 1988.

Literature: S. Wichmann, Wilhelm von Kobell. Monographie und kritisches Werkverzeichnis der Werke. Munich 1970, No 159 (here different size: 38,5:49,3 cm).

Wichmann dates the drawing „um 1791“. In 1791 Wilhelm von Kobell was invited - together with his father Ferdinand Kobell (1740-1799) - by Charles II August, Duke of Zweibrücken, to visit his art gallery at Karlsberg palace nearby Homburg/Saar. Maybe he found the motif for his drawing in the area around.
