Johann Jakob Frey
1813 Basle – Frascati 1865

View to Ardea with the Palazzo Sforza Cesarini, lain on a tuff rock.

Watercolour painting, on cream wove paper (papier vélin) with watermark: J Whatmann & Turkey Mill; signed, inscribed and dated „J.J. Frey Rom 1838.“ on lower right, numbered and inscribed, probably by the artist himself, „N 3. Ardea nahe von Roma in der Campagna di Roma nah Ostia 5...“ on an added old backing. 31:44,7 cm.

The number suggests that the paintings 1 and 3 (see also the item before) are part of a series probably made in commission. The two watercolour paintings belong to the earliest works of art Frey created in Rome !

There exists a variant of this motif in a private collection, dated 1844, which is a little bit larger than the watercolour described here.
