We give thanks to Prof. Dr. Helmut Börsch-Supan, Berlin, for his help identifying the artist and the person shown (letter from Oct. 2, 2012).

Provenance: From the estate of Pius Alexander Wolff.

Compare literature: R. Flatz, Theaterhistorische Porträtgraphik. Ein Katalog aus den Beständen der Theaterwissenschaftlichen Sammlung der Universität zu Köln. Berlin 1995, p 738, No 5800. Here the etching is imaged, which was also made by Eichens.

Wolff, a famous actor in the Goethe area, and his wife, the actor Amalie Wolff-Malcomi, already had been member of the company of the Weimar theatre from 1803. In that time the theatre was managed by J.W. von Goethe. From 1816 Wolff and his wife were engaged at the Berliner Theatre.

Our drawing should be made after the Berlin Theatre was be completed – in 1821 – , but before Wolff fell ill seriously and died.

The Berliner Theatre,  a major work of the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841), was opened as the Royal Theatre in 1821.
