Maerten de Vos
1532 – Antwerpen – 1603

Saint George with the Dragon. 5,7:4,9 cm.
Saint Hubertus, praying, with a steg, dogs, and a horse. 5,9:4,6 cm.
Saint John the Baptist with a lamb, standing in front of a church. 5,7:4,6 cm.
Saint Jerome in front of a Holy Rood.  5,9:4,6 cm.

4 pen-and-ink drawings in brown, brown wash, on handmade paper, mounted on a cardbord.

The drawing with John the Baptist is somewhat damaged at lower left margin and shows traces of red colour at the left side.

Preliminary drawings for copper engravings by Hieronymus Wierix (1553 ?-1619).

Maerten de Vos made numerous small-sized drawings of this kind, used by different artists of the families of copper engravers Wierix and Sadeler, but also by A. Collaert (about 1560-1618) and Ph. Galle (1537-1612) as preparatory drawings for copper engravings.

Two similar drawings „Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane“ and „The capture of Christ“ (both 5,9:4,6 cm) are owned by the print room of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and by the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge/Mass.
