Flemish, end of 16th century
after Marten de Vos
1532 – Antwerp – 1603

Esau selling his birthright to Jacob or The Lentil Stew (Gen 25,29-34).

Pen-and-ink drawing in brown, over a red chalk drawing, some brown wash, edged with a brown ink-line, on handmade paper with watermark: crowned shield with a cross hold by two standing lions, with attached circles. 20:26,7 cm.

Compare literature: Hollstein 68.

Probably drawn after the not reversed copper engraving by Gerard de Jode (1509 or 1517-1591), which was made after a drawing by Marten de Vos (1532-1603) from a 4-image-series about Esau and Jacob. (We greatfully acknowlege this classification made by Dr. Stijn Alsteens, New York, Email from Feb. 24, 2014).
