ascribed to
Aertgen Claesz., called Aertgen van Leyden
1498 – Leiden – 1564

Sketches on one sheet with male figures in different postures; head of a pope, mourners (probably for a Lamentation of Christ) etc.

Pen-and-ink drawings in brown, on handmade paper without watermark, at lower part contemporarily inscribed „alberto dura“. 29,7:20,2 cm.

Loss of paper at upper right corner, replaced.

Provenance: F. Abbott Collection, Edinburgh, Lugt 970.

Compare literature: Auction at Christie’s New York, Jan. 24th, 2001, Lot 151 with Fig.; Auction at Sotheby’s London, July 8th, 2004, Lot 66 with Fig.

The single sketches had been probably used as preparatory drawings for oil paintings: the man on the ledder at the left side certainly belongs to a Deposition as well as the mourning couple (Saint Mary and John) and the soilder with a helmet. The man shown twice in a similar posture can be seen as a bannerman, an interpretation which would explain the a raised right arm. A kneeling and praying man, similar to our one at the right side, is shown on the triptych (central picture) „Raising of Lazarus“ by Aertgen van Leyden, painted about 1530/35, preserved by the Stedelijk Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden.
